How to install an Expert Advisor in MT5
Your first useful milestone is simple: the intended EA loads in the intended terminal, with the settings you expect. This workflow makes installation repeatable even when several broker terminals share one computer.
Find the active data folder
Open the MT5 installation you will actually use, then choose File → Open Data Folder. Place the compiled EX5 in MQL5/Experts, keeping any supplied folder structure. An MQ5 is editable source; compile it in MetaEditor before expecting it to appear as a runnable EA. Do not choose a folder merely because its broker name looks familiar.
Load one identifiable copy
Refresh the Expert Advisors section in Navigator, or restart that terminal. Attach the EA to a dedicated chart. MT5 runs one EA per chart, so replacing it also replaces the previous chart EA. Check the displayed name, version, symbol and timeframe before loading a preset.
Check settings deliberately
- Read the package README and parameter guide.
- Confirm the account, symbol suffix and EA inputs.
- Review the individual EA permission and the terminal Algo Trading switch.
- Check Experts and Journal for initialization messages.
Create a repeatable starting point
Start in the Strategy Tester or a demo environment. Save the exact inputs and note the compiled filename. If the EA is missing, revisit the active data folder and compile output before changing unrelated platform settings. Keep the original delivery folder untouched and work from a clearly named copy.
