MT5 hedging vs netting: what EA users need to know
Two MT5 accounts can display the same symbol and still organise trades differently. Account position mode is one of the first compatibility checks worth making.
Understand the position model
A netting account maintains one position per symbol. Further deals can increase, reduce, close or reverse that position. A hedging account can hold multiple positions for the same symbol, including opposing directions. These are account mechanics, not descriptions of a strategy’s quality.
Read a simple example
Imagine an existing buy position and a later sell order of the same volume. Under netting, the sell can offset the buy. Under hedging, it can create a separate sell position unless the request specifically closes the original. The same entry idea therefore needs different position-management assumptions.
Check the source at the boundary
MQL5 exposes account mode through ACCOUNT_MARGIN_MODE. Review initialization checks, position iteration and close operations. An EA that selects by symbol alone may behave differently when several hedging positions exist. A multi-core system should document how each core identifies the positions it manages.
Confirm compatibility before configuring
- Read the product account requirement.
- Check the account mode reported by the terminal or broker.
- Use a matching demo account to verify entry and exit behaviour.
- Keep the account mode in every test note and deployment checklist.
