MQL5 CopyBuffer: indicator handles and closed-bar signals

In MQL5, an indicator handle identifies an indicator calculation. CopyBuffer retrieves its values. Keeping those two steps separate makes indicator-based EA logic easier to read and test.

Create and validate the handle

A typical EA creates its indicator handles during initialization and checks for INVALID_HANDLE. Record the indicator settings and timeframe with the handle. Recreating the same indicator for every incoming tick adds unnecessary work and makes error handling harder to follow.

Check that values are available

BarsCalculated reports how much indicator data has been calculated. CopyBuffer returns the number of elements copied or an error result. Check that the requested count was actually returned before using the destination values; an unready buffer should not silently become a trading signal.

Choose the bar deliberately

For CopyBuffer position-based requests, start position 0 refers to the current bar. A closed-bar rule commonly requests position 1. With a one-element destination, this distinction is straightforward; with several elements, also verify array ordering. Do not assume a copied buffer has the same indexing convention as another array in your program.

Make a small diagnostic case

1. Use one indicator and one known timeframe.
2. Log the bar time and selected value at a controlled frequency.
3. Compare the value with the terminal indicator display.
4. Test startup with history still loading, then ordinary subsequent bars.
