Multi-symbol EAs: which tick wakes the strategy?
An EA can read several instruments while running on one chart. That does not mean every instrument drives its OnTick callback. A scheduling design is needed when the strategy depends on a symbol that moves while the host chart is quiet.
Identify the host event
OnTick is generated for the symbol of the chart to which the EA is attached. Other instrument data can be read by the program, but the host event alone does not establish that all those quotes are fresh. A timer is one possible scheduling tool, not a substitute for checking timestamps.
Try an observation-only trace
Log the callback time, host symbol and last quote time for each requested instrument. Choose a short demo observation period with different activity levels. Do not place orders for this experiment; its purpose is to reveal the data clock.
Define stale-data handling
A hypothetical two-symbol condition should say whether it waits, skips or reuses a quote when one leg is old. Record the policy explicitly. Otherwise an apparent simultaneous relationship may actually combine prices from different moments.
Keep testing comparable
Before comparing two implementations, freeze the symbol list and history conditions. Ask AI to separate signal evaluation from order execution so that scheduling can be inspected independently. This lets you improve responsiveness without accidentally evaluating one signal several times.
