MT5 templates versus profiles: rebuild your workspace quickly
A template is useful for repeating one chart setup; a profile is useful for arranging a workspace of charts. Neither should be confused with a SET file that stores an EA input preset. Keeping those roles separate makes migrations easier.
Know what a template carries
MT5 templates can contain chart appearance, indicators, graphical objects and an attached Expert Advisor with its parameters. Applying a familiar-looking template can therefore change more than colours. Check the attached EA after applying it.
Use a demo workspace
Create a chart with a recognisable colour and one harmless indicator, save its template, then apply it to another demo chart. Next save a profile with two charts. Switch away and return, checking symbol, timeframe and attached programs rather than only the appearance.
Keep a small inventory
For each workspace, record the profile name, chart purpose and the matching EA version and preset. This is your own organisation layer; it prevents a template named gold from hiding several different strategy configurations over time.
Restore deliberately
After a profile change, inspect automated-trading permissions and the startup log before assuming the previous activity continued. A simple naming pattern such as strategy-version-purpose is easier to review with AI than a collection of default and final templates.
