How to ask AI to fix an MQL5 compiler error
An exact error message, its surrounding function and the intended behaviour are more useful than asking an assistant to rewrite an entire EA. Small changes are easier to understand and easier to reverse.
Prepare a useful prompt
State MQL5 and MetaTrader 5 explicitly. Include the compiler message and a minimal excerpt you are permitted to share. Ask for an explanation of the failing identifier or signature, followed by a narrow correction.
Keep platform APIs explicit
Ask the assistant to link the relevant MQL5 reference. Common mistakes include mixing MQL4 indicator calls with MQL5 handles or inventing helper functions. A plausible name is not evidence that a function exists.
Check the smallest change first
Save a copy, apply the correction and compile. Review new warnings and compare the changed lines. If the error moves, follow the new diagnostic rather than accepting a growing set of unrelated edits.
Build from an understandable base
MQLume gives you an editable project and documentation to work from. AI can help explain and modify that project, while MetaEditor and a focused behaviour check show what the change actually did.
